City diver Rebecca Gallantree congratulated after historic gold medal win
City of Leeds diver Rebecca Gallantree has received civic praise after her historic Great Britain gold medal success at the World Aquatics Championships in Kazan, Russia. In claiming gold in the team event with Tom Daley, Rebecca became the first British female diver to win a gold medal at a world championships.
The Lord Mayor of Leeds Cllr Judith Chapman said:
“We are extremely fortunate to be represented both at home and abroad by the amazing City of Leeds Diving Club and it is absolutely fantastic news that Rebecca Gallantree has won a gold medal for Great Britain in the team event with Tom Daley at the World Aquatics Championships in Kazan.
“In claiming this accolade, Rebecca has also become the first female British diver to win a gold medal at a world championships, which really does highlight what an special achievement this is and why as a city we all should be very proud.”
Cllr Lisa Mulherin, Leeds City Council’s executive member for health, wellbeing and adults said:
“To become the first British woman diver to win a gold medal at a world championships is truly a historic achievement, and Rebecca’s success is a great example of what can be achieved through sheer dedication, commitment and hard work.
“We should also be very proud that as a member of the City of Leeds Diving Club Rebecca trains and hones her skills using the tremendous world class facilities at our very own John Charles Centre for Sport, which can also be used by the public.
“Through programmes such as Leeds Lets Get Active and Leeds Girls Can we are undertaking a lot of work to promote the benefits of sport and exercise, and I hope that Rebecca’s achievement will inspire even more people, and young women and girls in particular, in Leeds to take part and find out more about what activities are available through our varied sport and leisure offer.”
