Leeds City Council Launches ‘The Leeds Platinum Jubilee Memories Project’ in Honour of Her Majesty the Queen’s 70-year Reign.

The Leeds Platinum Jubilee Memories Project aims to create a new archive of royal occasions through the decades, including everything from the Queen’s Coronation in 1952 to this year’s street parties for the Platinum Jubilee.

Anyone with a memory to share of a Royal event in Leeds can log on to the Leodis website and choose one of the pre-selected images to accompany their memory or submit their photographs for inclusion in the project. There will also be collection points for written memories and photos at libraries throughout Leeds and help with digital systems for those wishing to learn a new skill.

The Leeds Platinum Jubilee Memories Project will be one of several high-profile celebratory projects hosted by the Leeds Library Service, including participation in The Big Jubilee Booklist; Twixt t’Covers: The Big Jubilee Read Panel Event; three film screenings as a part of the Regional Film Club; Big Jubilee Read Jigsaws which include tea parties. Leeds Library Service will also host 70 Years On… Noticeboard Activity, a reader development activity, inviting people to suggest a book that readers will be enjoying in 2092!

In addition, the specially extended bank holiday weekend will see street parties in the city, beacon lightings, church services and more.

Speaking of the Leeds Platinum Jubilee Memories Project, the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Asghar Khan, said: “With the Platinum Jubilee, we have an excellent opportunity to create a remarkable historical record of 70 years of Her Majesty the Queen in Leeds.

“No matter the memory, whether it’s being a part of a crowd waiting to see the Queen; a street party past or present; or even meeting the Queen in Leeds, we want as many recollections as possible.

“The Platinum Jubilee Memories project will create a lasting historical legacy of the Queen’s time in Leeds. If we collect enough memories and photos, we intend to make a book to send to the Palace as a gift for the Queen.”

Commenting further, Councillor Mary Harland, Executive Member for Communities, said: “Leeds Library Service has something for everyone over the Platinum Jubilee period. I’m sure it will be a great deal of fun for everyone.

“As the longest-serving monarch in British history, it is essential that we not only celebrate with the incredible range of activities Leeds Library Service is hosting over the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee but also create a legacy for future generations to look back upon.

“The Leeds Platinum Jubilee Memories project provides that legacy.

“Therefore, I would encourage everyone to dig through their photos, write up their special royal memories, and be a part of this incredible Jubilee celebration.”
