Mansion’s illuminated windows bring a touch of glass to Christmas

A series of stunning illuminated Christmas scenes have transformed the windows of 500-year-old Temple Newsam House into a giant festive montage.

Created by one of the house’s visitor assistants, each of the beautiful images depicts one of the traditional verse of the Twelve Day of Christmas and has been designed for people to enjoy safely from outdoors as they take an evening stroll around the house and estate.

The seasonal scenes are a new feature of what will be a very different Christmas at the historic site, which has hosted many elaborate festive celebrations for the past 500 years.

Maya Harrison, principal keeper at Temple Newsam House, said: “Christmas has always been a very special time at Temple Newsam and the house has seem some memorable celebrations over the centuries, from huge feasts and dances hosted by aristocrats to our own Christmas exhibitions and events in more recent years.

“We wanted to ensure that, despite the current COVID-19 restrictions, we were still able to spread some festive cheer and give our visitors something beautiful and traditional to see while they’re enjoying the estate safely.”

Celebrating its 500^th anniversary this year, for many centuries Temple Newsam was a family home to some of the country’s most prominent aristocrats and their children.

The best known English version of The Twelve Days of Christmas was printed back in 1780 in a book called Mirth Without Mischief.

Meant as a memory game, players were required to repeat a verse of poetry recited by the leader. Those who made a mistake had to pay a penalty, in the form of offering a kiss or a sweet.

Temple Newsam House currently remains closed under Tier 3 restrictions. Home Farm is now open along with Temple Newsam Tea Rooms operating a take away service. Advance booking for Home Farm is recommended. The carparks, toilets and grounds remain open.
