Mill museum to host big spring celebration

Hundreds of Leeds families are set to flock to Thwaite Mills when the museum’s popular spring fair returns this month.

Taking place on Sunday, March 27, the event will feature an exciting programme of family-friendly activities including face painting, a bouncy castle and an appearance from the Easter bunny.

Last year’s event saw almost 1,000 people attend the Stourton attraction, which is one of the last remaining examples of a water-powered mill in Britain.

This month’s fair will be one of the first major events the mill has hosted since it was closed by flooding on Boxing Day.

The mill and the rest of the island on which it sits suffered extensive flooding, covering much of the area in a thick layer of silt and other debris which has now been cleared.

Councillor Brian Selby, Leeds City Council’s lead member for museums and galleries, said:

“It’s great news that Thwaite Mills is now back on its feet and ready to welcome families to their spring fair, which is always such a popular and successful occasion.

“I know a lot of hard work and time has gone in to getting the site back up and running and this event is a great way to celebrate that.”

The Thwaite Mills spring fair takes place on Sunday, Mar 27 from 11am until 4pm.

Entry to the festival is part of the normal admission price to Thwaite Mills Watermill.
