New eco-friendly biomass boiler at historic country house

An historic country house in Leeds has taken a huge step towards an eco-friendly future thanks to a new state-of-the-art biomass boiler.

The new environmentally friendly boiler is now up and running and is the latest in a programme of work that has seen the estate’s beautiful Georgian house receive a number of upgrades.

Using only virgin wood, the boiler will produce clean, white ash that can be used as fertiliser on land around the house’s sprawling estate and will help reduce the site’s carbon footprint and improve its sustainability.

The work has also seen the construction of a new boiler house within the walls of the old laundry room that is currently located at the back of Lotherton.

Previous work carried out to make the estate a greener place has included reduced electricity consumption through the introduction of LED lighting throughout the house.

The project has been part funded through an initiative that helps organisations and companies pay for their green energy.

Councillor Brian Selby, Leeds City Council’s lead member for museums and galleries, said:

“The installation of this new boiler is a tremendously positive step in making one of our historic sites a greener and more sustainable place.

“As some of the city’s most recognisable and popular attractions, our museums and galleries have a huge role to play in helping the city to be kinder to the environment and this project represents a real statement of intent.”
