Object of the week- Leeds United ticket

It was a thrilling era when Elland Road became synonymous with a unique brand of exciting, swashbuckling football.

Now visitors to Abbey House Museum can relive some of Leeds United’s 90s glory days at an exhibition dedicated to growing up in Leeds.

The museum’s Decades of Youth exhibition features objects and memories spanning more than 70 years which have been collected from local people.

Among the items on display include a ticket from Leeds United’s premiership clash with fierce rivals Manchester Utd on April 25, 1999.

The match finished 1-1, with cult fan favourite Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scoring for the Whites.

The club went on to finish the season fourth under new boss David O’Leary, their highest finish since winning the title seven years earlier, which also saw them qualify for the following season’s UEFA Cup.

Also on display is a Leeds United programme from their match against the Red Devils on April 27, 1994 and a jigsaw featuring a picture of the 1979-80 squad.

Decades of Youth has been co-curated by young curators from Abbey House Museum’s Vintage Youth Club.

Other objects included in the exhibition are classic computer games consoles, items from 50s and 60 department stores in Leeds and a Spice Girls doll from the 1990s.

Councillor Brian Selby, Leeds City Council’s lead member for museums and galleries, said:

“As anyone who has grown up in Leeds knows, it’s an amazing place to be young and what’s clear from this exhibition is that some of the experiences people have had in the city as young people have lasted a lifetime.”

Decades of Youth is open now at Abbey House Museum and runs until January.
