Plans for demonstrating sympathy and solidarity with the people of France for Leeds

Following the events in Paris, Leeds City Council is planning ways to demonstrate sympathy and solidarity with the people of France. The council is linking with partners in the city to find the most appropriate ways to give people in Leeds the chance to show their support for those in Paris who have lost their lives and been injured, along with their families and friends.

Councillor Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said:

“We know there are both many people from Leeds who live in and visit Paris, as well as many French people who are based in Leeds. As a consequence we intend to hold a ceremony in the heart of the city to allow people to express both their sorrow and solidarity.

“We will also work with others to make sure that appropriate support is available to those who may need it and make clear our commitment to standing up to terrorism and violence.”

The council is currently contacting organisations to agree the most appropriate activities, including Leeds first direct arena, universities, other businesses and groups in the city, as well as taking into account the French state’s intentions for memorials and mourning.
