Public health officials urge all eligible to protect themselves with winter vaccinations

Health

People across Leeds are being urged to protect themselves and their families this winter by taking up the offer of free vaccinations against flu and Covid-19.

Both viruses spread more easily during the winter period - when people spend more time indoors in close contact with each other - and can cause serious illness, particularly for older people, pregnant women, young children or people with weakened immune systems and long-term health conditions.

Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect against the viruses and reduce the risk of becoming seriously ill or needing hospital treatment.

Those who have had the vaccinations are more likely to have milder symptoms if they come into contact with the virus - and recover faster.

It comes as the UK Health Security Agency suggested there are signs the flu season may be starting earlier this year, with health officials urging all those eligible to take up the offer of vaccinations as soon as possible.

People can check their eligibility and book a free flu or Covid-19 vaccination through their GP, local pharmacy, the NHS app or the national booking service. If eligible for more than one vaccine, these can often be given during the same appointment.

From December 1, community clinics will also be made available at participating pharmacies for children from reception to year 11 who miss their in-school vaccination sessions.

This year, as part of a new national programme, NHS teams are also working with charity partners to offer flu and pneumococcal disease vaccinations to people sleeping rough or staying in homeless hostels or night shelters.

Vaccinations against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are also available for pregnant women and adults aged 75 to 79, helping to prevent serious respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis.

Councillor Emma Flint, Leeds City Council’s executive member equalities, adults and health, said: “National figures show last winter, the flu vaccination programme prevented an estimated 100,000 hospital admissions and 7,000 deaths – so if you are eligible, don’t put it off.

“Protection from previous vaccinations diminishes over time and viruses can change each year, making annual vaccinations essential for those who are vulnerable.

“Nobody wants to miss out on festive celebrations with their families and friends this winter and these vaccines provide the best possible protection.”

Victoria Eaton, Leeds City Council’s director of public health, said: “The advice is simple: if you’re eligible for a vaccination, please don’t wait to book your appointment. With the early signs that the flu season may be starting sooner this year, it’s vital that people take up the vaccination offer and protect themselves sooner rather than later.

“Vaccinations provide the best way to guard against serious illness and complications and also help ease demand on NHS and social care services during the busy winter period.”
