Response to the Southampton Tragedy and Appreciation for Community Support

Community safety

On behalf of the Sikh community of Leeds, we wish to express our deep sorrow and condolences following the tragic murder in Southampton. Our thoughts and prayers are with Henry Nowak's family and friends, and all those affected by this heart-breaking incident.

At times of tragedy, it is important that communities stand together in unity, compassion, and mutual respect. We strongly condemn all forms of violence and remain committed to promoting peace, understanding, and harmony within society.

The Sikh community of Leeds and Leeds City council are grateful for their strong and valued relationship. The Sikh community thank Leeds and Britain for their continued support, friendship, and solidarity with the Sikh community. The kindness, respect, and inclusiveness shown towards Sikhs across the United Kingdom have helped strengthen community bonds and foster a spirit of togetherness.

The Sikh faith teaches us the values of service, equality, and respect for all humanity. We remain dedicated to working alongside local authorities, community organisations, and our fellow citizens to build a safer, stronger, and more united society.

Once again, we extend our heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this tragedy and continue to value the strong relationship between Leeds City Council and the Sikh community, and we extend our thanks to the wider British public for their unwavering support and goodwill towards the Sikh community.

Yours faithfully,

Councillor James Lewis, Councillor Mary Harland and Councillor Emma Flint, Leeds City Council.

Bishop Arun Arora, Bishop of Kirkstall and Chair of Leeds Faith Forum.
