Roadworks set to begin next month on A65 Abbey Road

Short term congestion can be expected on the A65 Abbey Road adjacent to Kirkstall Forge while work takes place to improve the road.

The works include the reconstruction of a retaining wall and are expected to start on August 17 for approximately 10 weeks and the traffic management will be in place 24 hours a day for the full duration.

There will be no major road diversions as a contraflow system will be in place. The westbound carriageway will be closed to vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians with all traffic heading away from Leeds diverted to the eastbound lane. Traffic heading in to Leeds (eastbound) will use the bus lane which will be suspended. . A temporary 30mph speed limit will be in force where the works are taking place.

The footway on the south side of the road will also be closed but a crossing will be provided to allow pedestrians to cross and pass the works with minimal disruption.

Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council executive member for regeneration, transport and planning, said:

“Of course roadworks can be frustrating, but this will hopefully improve the road in the long run, especially as Kirkstall Forge and the railway station take shape.

 “We ask road users and pedestrians in the area to bear with us while work takes place and apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused. We aim to get the work done as quickly as possible and produce minimal disruption.”
