Shoppers encouraged to support retailers across Leeds

After a tough few months Leeds’s outstanding retail scene reopened in June, and hundreds of shops are COVID-secure and ready to welcome both old and new customers through their doors.

Leeds is one of the UK’s biggest shopping destinations outside London and truly is a shopper’s paradise. As the city opens back up to visitors, retailers need the support of shoppers more than ever. 

The retail offer in Leeds is extensive, and with its compact and walkable city centre, shoppers are never far away from the biggest brands, the best boutiques, and those cool and quirky finds that markets and independents are renowned for.

Shoppers can take a day to themselves to safely wander through Leeds’s ornate Victorian arcades, picture perfect and full of history. They can explore 120 shops, bars and restaurants under the iconic glass roof of Trinity Leeds, get their designer fix in the grand Victoria Leeds or find hidden gems and tasty treats at The Corn Exchange. If markets are more their thing, they should make sure to soak in the unique atmosphere of Grade I listed Kirkgate Market, one of the largest covered markets in Europe and the birthplace of Marks & Spencer.

Football fans can even celebrate Leeds United’s recent promotion by picking up some merchandise at The Merrion Centre, home to the official Leeds United club store.

Shoppers are being encouraged to shop locally too, staying closer to home in their local neighbourhood. Support the vibrant, independent stores in Horsforth, the bustling high street of Morley and the diverse shops rich in culture in the historic market town of Otley.

“We have all faced exceptional challenges over the past months and, like many businesses, shops and shopping centres across the city are still suffering. The retail offer in Leeds is really special, from our spectacular Victorian Arcades and markets to our buzzing streets full of independent shops out in our neighbourhoods. The retailers that help to make Leeds great need your support now more than ever. If you are able to, I urge you to please support them, both in the city centre and in your local neighbourhood. Remember to shop safely, wearing a face covering unless you are exempt.”

Visit Leeds recently launched Rediscover Leeds, a campaign aiming to get people back out exploring the city’s thriving leisure, retail, culture and hospitality sectors. The campaign encourages people to explore Leeds in a safe and sensible way. Face coverings are now mandatory in shops and retailers have worked hard to ensure social distancing measures are in place alongside increased levels of cleanliness to keep visitors safe as they rediscover our great city.
