Third sector organisations in Leeds recognised for enormous contributions during COVID-19 pandemic
Third sector organisations across Leeds will be recognised for their enormous contributions to the city during the COVID-19 pandemic at a series of special virtual events to be held over the next few weeks.
The events have been organised by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Eileen Taylor, and will thank charities, voluntary groups and community groups for their hard work in supporting communities over the last eight months.
In what has been an extremely difficult and challenging time for residents and communities across the city, third sector organisations have continued to deliver exceptional services and provide vital support despite being hit hard by the effects of the pandemic themselves.
Hosted by the Lord Mayor, the first event will take place virtually this week and will be attended by a number of third sector organisations including Feel Good Factor, Leeds African Communities Trust and OPAL (Older People’s Action in the Locality). They will be joined by two special guest speakers, HM Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Mr Ed Anderson, and the High Sheriff of West Yorkshire, Mr Jonathan Thornton.
The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Eileen Taylor, said:
“The last eight months have been incredibly difficult for third sector organisations as they have responded to the unprecedented effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, they have continued to provide vital support to our communities with their exceptional services.
“The upcoming virtual events will be an opportunity for me to personally thank representatives from some of these organisations and recognise the enormous contributions they have made to the city during the pandemic.
“I have witnessed first-hand the work of the Leeds African Communities Trust who despite being formed less than a year ago have stepped up to the COVID-19 response and have supported our diverse communities as the first hub to provide multicultural food.
“Leeds wouldn’t be the same without third sector organisations and I am incredibly grateful for each and every charity, community group and voluntary group that improve the lives of so many people across the city.”
