Countdown to completion begins as Dawsons Corner improvement works enter final stages

The £44m scheme is transforming one of Leeds’ busiest junctions, improving journeys for everyone while creating safer and more accessible routes for people walking, wheeling and cycling. The improvements will also help reduce congestion, improve connectivity between Leeds and Bradford and support more reliable bus services.

As part of the next phase of work, repairs and resurfacing on the Stanningley Bypass northbound carriageway is due to be completed on Tuesday 25 August. This will be followed by resurfacing works on the B6157 Bradford Road (eastbound), requiring overnight road closures from Wednesday 26 August to Friday 28 August.

The temporary closure will affect a section of Bradford Road between Dawsons Corner and Woodlands Terrace between 8pm and 5am each night. A signed diversion route will be in place, and the road will reopen each morning.

During the overnight closures, access and egress via Cote Lane will not be permitted. Access to Pudsey Civic Hall and West Yorkshire Police's Pudsey station will be maintained via alternative signed routes.

The resurfacing programme forms part of the wider improvement scheme, which has already transformed the junction, including a new road layout and major progress on walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure. The latest surfacing works will help ensure road users benefit from a smoother, more resilient highway surface as the scheme nears completion.

Further road surfacing and traffic management activity will continue through the autumn/winter, with some additional temporary overnight closures required throughout this period. Details will be shared with residents, businesses and road users in advance of each phase of work.

Councillor Peter Carlill, Leeds City Council’s executive member for highways and planning, said:

"Reaching this final surfacing phase is another significant milestone for the Dawsons Corner and Stanningley Bypass improvement scheme, and marks the beginning of the countdown to completion.

“This is a major investment in one of the region's busiest transport corridors, which will deliver lasting benefits for residents, businesses and everyone travelling between Leeds and Bradford. The scheme will improve journey reliability, support public transport, create safer and better-connected routes for people walking, wheeling and cycling, and help keep traffic moving through this important junction. By encouraging through-traffic to remain on the ring road, it will also help reduce pressure on nearby communities, making local journeys safer and more pleasant for residents.

“We recognise the disruption that roadworks can cause and I'd like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their continued patience while this work is completed. There are still some further significant final surfacing and finishing works to come this autumn/winter, but we're now entering the final stages of the project and can look forward to seeing the full benefits of the scheme being realised when it is completed in early 2027."

The Dawsons Corner improvement scheme serves one of the region's busiest transport corridors, with around 57,000 vehicles and 1,200 pedestrians and cyclists using the junction every day. Once complete, the scheme will provide improved walking and cycling connections, enhanced bus infrastructure, additional road capacity and new landscaping, helping support future growth across Leeds and West Yorkshire.

Road users are advised to plan ahead, allow extra time for journeys and follow signed diversion routes during the overnight closure periods.
