New visuals reveal future look of transformed Dawsons Corner junction
Leeds City Council has released new visuals showing how Dawsons Corner will look once major upgrade works to the busy junction are complete. The improvements aim to reduce congestion, improve safety and create better routes for all road users on this key gateway.
Construction began in May 2025 to upgrade the junction at Dawsons Corner (A647/A6120). The scheme forms part of the Connecting Leeds transport strategy to maintain and improve the city’s Inner and Outer Ring Roads, supporting future growth and offering smoother, more reliable journeys.
Dawsons Corner connects the A647 Stanningley Road and the A6120 Ring Road – two of Leeds’ most important transport routes. Every day, around 57,000 vehicles and 1,200 pedestrians and cyclists travel through the junction, highlighting the need for long-term improvements.
Important travel information: 24–27 April
Road users are advised to plan ahead for Friday 24 April to Monday 27 April, when a major phase of works will require significant traffic management changes and road closures.
To enable the setup of this phase, the following will be in place:
- Bradford Rd (B6157) eastbound lane closure (20 April to 24 April) in the run up to the weekend.
- Full weekend road closure: Ring Road (A6120), Farsley and Bradford Road (B6157).
- Two-way traffic routes remaining open: Bradford Road (A647) and Stanningley Bypass.
- Access maintained: New Pudsey train station and Owlcotes Shopping Centre.
- Diversions: Fully signed vehicle and pedestrian diversions throughout the weekend.
Residents, businesses and commuters are encouraged to check the project website and sign up for updates as the works progress: https://dawsonscorner.commonplace.is/
Leeds City Council's deputy leader and executive member for economy, transport and sustainable development, Councillor Jonathan Pryor, said: “I am delighted to share the new visualisation of Dawsons Corner, which reveals a transformed, enlarged junction layout, making it better and safer for all road users.
“The need to improve the junction is a major priority. It’s important not only to improve traffic flow and air quality, but also to support essential links to future housing growth and developments, and for people to be able to access jobs more easily with consistent travel times.
“It is pleasing to see that the works are progressing to the planned schedule, with the next major phase earmarked to take place over 24–27 April. We are keeping residents and businesses regularly updated on progress and have set up a website with information about the project, along with plans and timescales. Local residents and businesses are engaged about the works, so they understand how the construction works may affect them.
“We appreciate the works will lead to some disruption and recognise that it takes time to adjust to such a major change. We thank businesses, residents and bus operators for their patience, and we look forward to the long-term benefits once the scheme is completed.”
The Dawsons Corner upgrade is scheduled to be completed in early 2027.
